Initial Situation
When sheathed thermocouples are required for a cylinder liner in a marine diesel engine, absolute ruggedness is essential. The customer for this application—a company in the marine engine manufacturing sector—operates a cylinder liner approximately two meters high on its test bench. High-precision temperature measurement is required at various points within this cylinder liner.

These and similar processes generate heat. Monitoring temperatures is essential for the proper design, operation, and maintenance of the running sleeve. It is, therefore, a key process in a highly sensitive, technically demanding product area.

Implementation
The Type K sheathed thermocouples used have a diameter of 3 mm. This makes them very robust and ideally suited for use in marine diesel engines.
The design and installation of the thermocouples are carried out according to the customer’s drawings. The products are ultimately custom-manufactured in Stapelfeld, Germany, to ensure they have exactly the desired characteristics (e.g., different lengths).
In addition, the entire assembly process takes place within the production facility in Stapelfeld. This is how the thermocouples are …
- inserted into the designated holes,
- laid according to the installation plan,
- marked and labeled,
- finally secured.
Mounting the thermocouples on the cylinder liner, in particular, poses a challenge. This large machine component weighs several hundred kilograms and must be handled with precision in order to mount the various thermocouples at different levels with 100% accuracy.
In this project, we are particularly benefiting from our long-standing customer relationship and our flexibility. This has allowed us to acquire valuable expertise over the years in handling particularly large and heavy machine components.

Result
Use in marine diesel engines requires particularly robust sheathed thermocouples in various configurations, which are custom-mounted directly onto the engine component (liner). In total, approximately 30 thermocouples are mounted at different locations on the liner to measure different temperatures at various points and levels. This enables the customer to properly design and operate the liner at all times.
