Initial Situation

What do thermocouples do in space? They are attached to satellites to monitor temperatures in various modules (e.g., control modules or other electronic modules).

The customer for this custom-made product—a satellite manufacturer—must guarantee the functionality of the components under particularly challenging conditions. For this reason, there are several very precise technical specifications that must be met:

  • Suitability for use in cryogenic conditions (space)
  • Layout and Characteristics of Thermocouples
  • Special Cleaning Instructions

Implementation

For this application, Type T sheathed thermocouples are the preferred choice. These thermocouples perform particularly well at low temperatures (below -200 degrees Celsius), which is why they are used not only in refrigeration and cryogenics but also frequently in the harsh environments of space exploration.

The precise requirements for layout, material properties, and cleaning are adhered to and verified during the production process through inspection documentation.

As a result, the products consist of the thermocouple itself, a self-adhesive surface sensor, and a long lead wire coiled in a figure-8 pattern (for overall above-average ease and efficiency in installation and handling).

In addition, the thermocouples are wrapped in Kapton tape and fitted with wire ferrules at their open ends. Peter Schmüser from Project Engineering explains this in the video above.

  • Test documentation for layout and cleaning,
  • Self-adhesive surface sensor,
  • Wrapped in Kapton film,
  • Wire ferrules on the open ends.

To the best of my knowledge, ThermoExpert is currently the only supplier on the market that manufactures these Type T thermocouples.

Result

Using sheathed thermocouples in the aerospace industry requires meeting the most stringent technical requirements. As a result, the customer receives products that are batch-consistent, complete with accompanying test documentation, ensuring that every thermocouple precisely meets the specifications.

Thanks to its exceptionally easy handling (e.g., the sensitive, self-adhesive tip), the customer is able to effectively attach and insulate the thermocouples to the satellite on their own before they are sent out into the depths of space.

Protective measures such as Kapton film provide the necessary durability so that Type T thermocouples can function in harsh environments and at low temperatures.

Why? Because our ideal temperature is exactly 360 degrees. For 100% flexibility, quality, and service. Not off-the-shelf—but from ThermoExpert°.
